A Day in the Life of A Beauty Educator

Here at The Original HMF, I frequently wear many hats. I’m a wife, a mother, and an entrepreneur - and most days I have to accomplish something with all three. Ever wondered what a day in my busy life looks like? I'm going to take you along on an action-packed, behind-the-scenes view of my day and give you a few tips and tricks that consistently make my days easier. On the agenda: meetings, Instagram engagement, answering emails, a photoshoot, dentist appointments, taking care of my kids, writing blog content...maybe remembering a meal or two? Believe me, my days start early.

Morning

By 7 AM, I’m usually showered, dressed, and somewhat ready for the day - busy getting lunch together while I get the kids up and dressed before taking them over to school. Because a large portion of HMF involves social media, I can do a lot of my work on the go. At red lights, I have the chance to reply to an email about collaboration. While I’m getting gas, that’s an opportunity to schedule my next beauty appointment or post an Instagram story. My mind is always running, and stepping away from work is hard for me. There’s never a moment where I’m not working! Luckily, I love what I do.

So, on this particular day, I’m heading to an amazing event hosted by my friend and business coach, Katrina Aronson. Katrina is an incredible coach for female entrepreneurs and has been hosting Safe + Social events for local creatives. The event is called Brand Shots and Business Thoughts, which combines a branding photoshoot with a 20-minute coaching session with Katrina for each attendee.

Since I’ll be in front of the camera lens today, there are a few steps I like to take prior. First is a spray tan! Pro-tip: I always go a shade or two darker than usual because bright studio lights tend to wash out the skin! I also never spray tan my face, it can clog your pores and give a muddy effect to the skin. Instead, I love to utilize M-61 PowerGlow Peel Gradual Tan on my face. So much so that I wrote an entire blog on these products, found here!

Another must for me before a photoshoot is a blowout! After dropping the kids off, running back home to take out the dog, upload a video and change my shirt - this is my next stop - 9 AM sharp. Don’t worry, I remembered breakfast!

Most of you know that the journey to healthy hair has been a long one for me, and I usually don’t visit the blow dry bar very often. I am really particular about my hair after the damage and I want to make sure that I'm keeping my hair in the best possible condition because I put so much time and effort, work, and money into repairing my hair. However, my extensions are out and this is my first photoshoot with short hair so a great blowout really gives me that boost of confidence I want today!

Now normally I would go in either mostly dry or completely dry and just have them style it, but today I'm going to let them do the whole shebang. I'm going to let them wash my hair, fully blow dry so it looks thicker and fuller, and I'm going to have them curl it. I used to be afraid to tell people things about how to do my hair, but after having my hair ruined I’m not shy anymore.

It’s your hair, be honest and express your concerns or expectations! Usually, I’ll say something like “I know this is probably a given and I understand that you're a professional but I've had bad experiences in the past so I just need to tell you this for myself.”

For me, blow dry bar specifications include:

  • Rough dry my hair

  • I have a very sensitive scalp, be gentle

  • Please don't apply too much heat, my hair is very fragile

I put that out there to start with so we’re on the same page. if I had my extensions in I would be giving them directions for that as well -  I’ve had one ripped it out of my hair and it was incredibly painful so now I give them full directions, and you should feel okay about doing that too!

I wanted to give you a couple more tips for going to the blowout bar as well. I wear a button-down shirt so it doesn't mess up my hair once I've had it done when I go to change my clothes. Don't wear any jewelry, because when they spray with the hairspray and the water I don't like it to get on my jewelry and make it look cloudy. Also, I don't have them brush out my curls at all. I leave them be because I know that I need them to look good for later!

Afternoon

I’m back home and preparing for my event later! At this event, I’ll be changing clothes multiple times for each look during the photoshoot, and I have to leave early to head to the dentist. For me, planning ahead is a must. I’m habitually late, so making sure I have everything I need packed and ready ahead of time is key! Each of my outfits is planned out, with coordinating shoes and accessories, and then packed accordingly in a garment bag. I also have a tote to carry the extras - my computer, backup accessories, a snack, all that stuff. Keeping things organized gives me the best shot at getting somewhere on time with everything I need!

After the event, it’s off to the dentist and TMJ specialist. I talked about it a little bit before that I have really bad TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction. This condition creates a lot of jaw pain for me and turns out to be the reason behind one of my beauty issues - so I’m hoping to get some of that resolved!

Evening

If this was a normal day, I would have had zoom calls, answering emails, preparing for other Instagram lives, collaboration, things like that - it's just nonstop. Thankfully today my husband was able to pick up our kids and I got to meet them out for dinner after my dentist appointment. From there, it’s back home for homework, nighttime routines with the kids...and then settling down on the couch with my laptop. I told you I had a hard time putting down the work!

My days may be long and nights even longer, but I’m so thankful to be doing what I love and for an audience like YOU who cares.

Peace, Love and Busy Days,

XX,

Jenna
